285 "Curator's Choice" Items - Simply Canada's Best Historical Memorabilia - 1

Intro 1 2 3 4 5 6
Note: Though these unique and rare items are on an internet Museum, they are part of a bricks and mortar collection that is genuine, comprising over 7,500 antique (most over 100 years old) historical paintings, prints, photos and memorabilia items that belong together, but are housed in a secure vault that is not publicly accessible.
This unique collection of rare - one-of-a-kind - Canadian historical items was, over a period of many years, sleuthed out, researched, authenticated, and acquired for the Canadian Anglo-Boer War Museum, by the museum's Director of Research and Curator of Collections, longtime Canadian historian, documentary filmmaker, and investigative journalist, John Goldi csc.

Disclaimer: Please note: these items are displayed only as historical mementoes of People, Places, and Events. They exist only as witnesses to, often, totally disgraceful and shameful historic events. Displaying them does in no way intend any kind of patriotic support for resorting to arms or conducting wars of any kind - past or present - as an acceptable way for resolving issues of any kind between Peoples and Nations. If anything they attest to the enormous public policy failures of past generations of Canadian leaders and the people who blindly followed and supported them and their corporate and tribal agendas, to visit death and destruction on targeted civilian populations at home in Canada (thousands of innocent Indian, Métis, French-Canadian victims), and abroad (millions of innocent Boer, German, Japanese, & Muslim civilian victims).

"After reporting on the doings of our national politicians on Parliament Hill,
it's a refreshing relief to be able to get back to covering a mass-murderer..." (Pickton who killed some 40 women)
Stevie Cameron - Canadian National Affairs Columnist, interviewed on CBC (approximate quote)

flashing newGreat Canadian Heritage Treasure I believe this is the best Boer War trophy flag in existence, bar none, and may very well have been the last official flag flown by President Paul Kruger before he was removed from his last headquarters at Machadodorp, with the help of Canadian units in 1900.

It was collected by Captain Agar Adamson who raced into town, to liberate the flag, as the Boers fled.

He outraced a British junior officer and fellow trophy collector, later Field Marshal William Riddell Birdwood, 1st Baron Birdwood, GCB, GCSI, GCMG, GCVO, CIE, DSO of Gallipoli notoriety.

Otherwise this flag would have ended up in Birdwood's collection and would be housed today in the British Imperial War Museum.

It came to our museum directly from his family.

Some fading and rips, "liberated" by Capt. Agar Adamson, Lord Strathcona's Horse, Aug. 1900, Machadodorp.
Great Canadian Heritage Treasure I believe this is the most fabulous camera in Canadian history, and one of the most important in world history.

What a fabulous discovery is the camera that Lt. JC Mason took with him to South Africa in 1899, and with which he took the world's very first genuine combat photo In the front lines of a real engagement, as a result of which he had his helmet shot and his badge shot off.

He proudly had his name and that of his regiment printed on the case.

Some may say it was done to prevent theft. That would be wrong. More than anything James did it for pride.

flashing newGreat Canadian Heritage Treasure I believe this is the best sword in Canadian history, as it belonged to Capt. James Cooper Mason, who wore it at the Battle of Paardeberg where he was wounded, won the DSO, and where he also took the world's first combat photograph, on Feb. 18, 1900.

There are lots of fine swords. Many have only "word of mouth" provenance, from someone... This one is inscribed with James' name and came directly from his family.

Even when swords are "named" to an officer, they were only used on ceremonial occasions and are very rarely inscribed with the owner's name but only come with unreliable "word of mouth" attribution.

We also know James used this sword in South Africa. In fact there is a photo of him, taken only hours before the Battle of Paardeberg, showing him standing in the midst of his infantrymen, as they rest on the way to fight, with him wearing the sword.

Other Canadian officers are wearing their swords as well, a practice that was soon stopped. They were uesless as weapons and the glittering attracted riflefire.

Bacon prints of the battle also show Canadians charging, waving their swords.

I believe this sword, with its awesome provenance, may very well be the last sword ever worn by a combattant on an active Canadian battlefield. Its provenance and certification of use is inviolate and cannot be matched by any other sword we know of.

James Mason, his brother officers and men, literally only hours before the bloodiest battle of the entire Boer War.

The time: early on Bloody Sunday, Feb. 18, 1900.

James is wearing the very sword above, which is engraved with his name.

Only hours later he would be grievously wounded and sent to hospital to recover.

I believe this is the best Canadian battlefield picture, being an original chromolithograph of Canada's first ever battle, fought overseas.

The foreground figure, waving the sword, could very well have been James Mason, who was wounded during the attack and awarded the DSO for gallantry.

flashing newGreat Canadian Heritage Treasure I believe this is the best dress bicorn hat in Canadian history, as it belonged to the founder of the Royal Canadian Navy.

Captain Charles Stuart's fabulous dress bicorn hat, in its original custom-fitted metal case, is a splendid example of the type.

It is made of beaver pelt, and is adorned with a dress ribbon and gilt gold hat epaulettes.

The hat itself is not soft overall, but more like a hard shell type like a derby. So it does not take kindly to compressing and needs the hard shell case for protection.

Charles' fabulous dress epaulettes are preserved in their own box. They are surprisingly heavy, nearly 2 kilos, as they are major constructions. Oddly they are named Royal Naval Reserve - not Royal Canadian Naval Reserve.

The button features a Georgian crown and the letters R, V - and over the anchor shank - N, for Royal Naval Volunteer.

flashing newGreat Canadian Heritage Treasure I believe this is probably the most fabulous bandolier in Canadian military history.

It is in superlative shape but does show that it was extremely well used in its life, before being shoved into a trunk as a war souvenir by its previous soldier owner.

Names and numbers scratched on it are mysterious.

We offer a possible explanation for most of them.

Its most prominent name is F Warren, scratched on the back.

It also came from descendants of F Warren at a house clearance, when immediate family had lost touch and interest, with a distant relative of long ago.

Falkland Fitzmaurice Warren was born in 1868 and signed up as #394 with Strathcona's Horse, in Vancouver, on Feb. 9, 1900. His father was a colonel.

So he was an owner of this bandolier and used it during the year long campaign as the SH accompanied General Buller's drive up into the Boer heartland from Natal.

Falkland returned to Canada at the end of 1900, presumably carrying this bandolier.

But that is not the end of the story.

The bandolier has another identical name scratched on it, twice, in different places, even though they are somewhat faint and very well worn: that of one S Burnett N.299.

It belonged to Edwin McCormick who served two terms in South Africa and blew it when they buried the Canadians after the Battle of Hart's River, Mar. 31, 1902.

It is rivaled only by the bugle of Bugler Douglas Williams, which he blew during the Battle of Paardeberg in 1900 and is in the QOR museum in Toronto.

Proposed (Amended) Canadian War Museum Bragging Button #2
Orig. pinback - Image Size - 23 cm
Suggested Outlet - Canadian War Museum Gift Shop
Another proposed adaptation of a Canadian War Museum bragging pinback that is suitable for wearing to high society kaffeeklatches, fancy dinners, and Remembrance Day ceremonies. It comes with a professionally embossed Certificate of Authenticity that guarantees that the girl is dead (not an actress), is an actual "Hun" deliberately targeted in Dresden, Germany, and was killed in a nighttime bombing attack involving dozens of Canadian RCAF planes, and hundreds of Canuck aircrew, on Feb 13, 14, 1945, only three months before the war was over.

Apologists say she's better off dead anyway, because had she lived, she would only have suffered a "fate worse than death," that was inflicted on millions of German girls and women who were raped, most repeatedly - many some 60 or 70 times - and then many often killed by Allied troops as they invaded Germany in the last months of the war.

It has been called the "greatest phenomenon of mass rape in history."

Now do you know why Canadian veterans so uniformly and notoriously refused to talk about or discuss what they had seen and done overseas in World War II?

600,000 is a minimum estimate of the number of German civilians - mostly women, teens, children, babies, and old folks - deliberately targeted for extermination, and incinerated or asphyxiated during carpet bombing of city centres in the last years of World War II. In fact an estimated 5 million German civilians are recorded as being killed by Allied war activities. Remember exterminating German civilian populations was a deliberate policy and an Allied military and war aim. So the bragging button of 600,000 is conservative at best.

Now do you know why Canadian veterans so uniformly and notoriously refused to talk about or discuss what they had seen and done overseas in World War II?

flashing newGreat Canadian Heritage Treasure I believe this is the finest Boer War Martini-Henry trophy rifle brought back by a Canadian soldier.

It's an 1896 Martini-Henry "improved version" made by the British firm Westley Richards on contract to ZAR - the Zuid Afrikaanshe Republiek (The Transvaal or South African Republic of the Boers, under President Paul Kruger.)

Westley Richards had these rifles manufactured by Auguste Francotte in Liège, Belgium for the Boer Republic at a time that relations between the Boers and the British were still good.

And they are so stamped on the right side of the receiver: "Made Specially for ZAR."

The manufacturer described them as "No. 2473 Westley Richards Improved Martini-Henry rifle with indicator in block and side screw."

The 8,000 rifles produced were sold instead to the South African Boer Republics: 7,700 by 1897 to ZAR (Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek - South African Republic), and a few thousand to the Orange Free State.

Canadian Golden Jubilee Display Flag, 1887
Orig. cotton - Size - 20 x 36"
Found - Kitchener, ON
I believe this is the finest Canadian peacetime display flag in existence as it is tied to a person, a place, and an event.

In 1887, this flag traveled to Britain with a young girl from Thorold, Ontario, bound via New York to attend the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations in London.

There is little reason to doubt this story that came attached to this flag from a descendant of that woman and from whom we acquired the flag.

It clearly dates to 1887, when that portrait photo of Queen Victoria was made, and the five province cartouche was used on Canadian flags.

But the seller stubbornly refused to divulge her name to us.

Why?

Was he stealing it from a family archive that he didn't want his siblings to get wind of it? It's a common source of memorabilia.

Was it stolen from him from a museum collection?

Some 90% of historical items stolen from museums is stolen by staff members and either kept, or resold anonymously for money.

"Canada's Finest" Murdered in a plot between politicians, corporate bosses, and the mainstream media. The war against the Muslims, she was forced to fight, on trumped up charges, will remain the biggest crime of the 21st century.

The CWILLKILL coalition of European invaders, targeted Muslims and ancient civilization in trying to wreak out political and economic advantages for themselves, and their cronies. With their brutal technological superiority, and seemingly endless sources for over-the-top military funding for industrial-sized killing machinery, they obliterated hundreds of thousands of Muslim women, teens, children, babies, old folks, and men - all in pyjamas and burqas, of course - and totally destabilized one Muslim country after another in the Middle East and Africa.

In the process they created a fetid breeding ground for "terrorism," throughout the Middle East and North, West, and East Africa, creating horrifically vengeful blowback by fanatic anti-European partisans locally.***

But they also stirred up angry terrorist attacks, by locals, in their own home countries, so bearing the triggering responsibility for the hundreds of civilians killed in Spain, France, the UK, the US, and Canada.

Without these European aggressive, corporate - directed militarists bombing and shooting up foreign Muslim countries, none of these hundreds of European civilians would have been targeted or killed, in their own homelands, at the hands of their own citizens. Or the 300 plus young Canadian military personnel sacrificed to effect corporate agendas in Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq.

*** They're very good at it. Remember, this is the same crowd, animated by the same kind of racist hate, that totally destabilized Germany after WWI, guaranteeing everyone with the fury of WWII, only twenty years later. Thanks to the racist orchestrations of the victors of WWI - to make the Hun pay - so totally destabilizing the political, social, and economic life of Germany, WWII with its 75 million dead became the worst event in world history, for ordinary people, though great for the corporatocracy that grew rich from war profiteering. After 2001, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and their Halliburton cronies, wanted to repeat the financial success with the war against the Muslims. And found willing cronies in Canada.
